For the safety bar, you are pushing on the correct part. It may require a bit of force to get out.

Make sure that you have the spring lifted completely off the bar (this is what they tell you to use the paperclip for). You should see the small notch that the spring fits into - that notch is in the safety bar itself. If the spring is still in that notch, you're not getting the bar removed.

I usually use the key supplied with the gun to get it started, using the key to apply pressure to one side of the bar. Once it breaks free a little bit, you should be able to pull it out by hand; possibly with a pair of pliers if necessary. Try both sides - if it won't budge one way, try the other way - it will come out on either side.

You shouldn't need a hammer to get it out unless yours is unusually stuck. Keep at it - I know mine was a bit of a pain the first time, too.
