I'm looking to buy A Steyr Scout in .308 . To purchase this rifle is no trile sum for me. That being said I'll admit I'm a bit of a gun snob. I know this rifle is somewhat one of a kind. Is it really worth it ? I do want the best. Tell me why this rifle is tops, or is there a better option ?

I guess I want it for what its intended for. A sort of "Jack of all trades" rifle . Doing a few things well , but not a specialized rifle, as Jeff Cooper intended.

The Scout is an excellent weapon and, with the Leupold or Burris scout scopes, a way better shooter than most of us. If you've never had the chance to manipulate one, then it's hard to compare. Let's just say it feels supremely competent. The bolt throw, the balance, the safety, the bi-pod. It works.

Should you buy it? I don't know. I know that I'll eventually own one, if possible in 338.

To get to the technical part of the barrel length, go to www.shootingsoftware.com and read up on the pressure trace, then read Chris Long's site on barrel length and pulses. Col. Cooper intuited this years ago, now we have the hard data. You can find a lot on the www.frfrogspad.com. Specifically, http://www.steyrscout.org/project.htm. I'm on my 2nd .308 Scout now. I like the Scout concept very much, and use mine primarily as a stalking (hunting)rifle, it excels for me in this role, being light enough to carry all day and accurate and powerful enough to take care of all the species I might encounter here (UK).

It has some neat features such as the spare mag in the stock, which I really like, and the integral folding bipod is useful sometimes, too, and way better than no bipod, (also better than mounting an after market bipod, which makes the gun clumsy). You son't get these on the Ruger Gunsite Scout (which I also rather like the look of, but the version they ship to the UK is without the flash-hider and threaded barrel, making it a no-go for a sound mod, which is pretty much standard equipment on UK hunting rifles, these days).

Can't tell you to buy it, only that I've enjoyed mine.

I've had my Scout for 11 or 12 years now and damn glad I got it. I have taken it through the German Alps everything else in every kind of condition you can imagine. It still shoots 1.5in grouping at 300 meters. I have harvested well over a hundred animals with it of all sizes on the European continent. I have a SSG 69 as well but all my hunting is with the .308 scout. The scout is the best most practical hunting rifle for mid-range <500yds hunting there is. I have even impressed other hunters that own 20+ rifles with my scout for both accuracy and ergonomics. It is however a bit expensive. I think its worth every penny.

Well like Jeff Coper said. You have to drive it to get it. I have two 308 and 376 They have both killed deer . They are the fastest and easist first hit to be had. Amazeing how well they work in the feild. The only negative I had was in a blowing snow storm at around 0 Deg F after beeing on stand 1/2 a day I missed the safety first try. I would have missed the safety on any gun cold as I was. The deer was running and I still got the safety off second try and made the 1 shot kill. I also shot a deer running up a mountain side at 310 yds one shot kill. It is easier to shoot than a video game. you must try one to get it. If your a gun snob just spend the money. J.Michael

I have two scouts in .223. Why two, two sons. You don't leave one scout for two boys to share when you're dead. The Ching sling is amazing and makes shooting the gun in any position rock solid. The optics are clear and eye relief is not a problem. Like others who have responded to this thread, the rifle needs nothing done to it. Jeff Cooper and the employees at Steyr made sure of that. I have bought and sold quite a few guns in my time. I feel Steyr rifles are by far my favorite. When you look at this rifle, you realize they put thought into it at every corner. Back-up sights, lower accessory attachment, secret pocket under the hand grip, able to adjust the trigger, able to add to the stock length, snow and mud grooves in the bolt, safety considerations in the bolt and trigger mechanism. Gray, black, or realtree stock patterns. And we could go on. Shoot one. You'll then realize why it's amazing. I have not shot the scout in .308, but I hear is has a little kick because of the light weight. I don't have that issue with .223. My .308 steyr is a heavy barrel, double set trigger sniper rifle that is just too heavy to take hunting all day. Plus, .223 round in the heart or lungs does drop a deer nice and fast.
