i have been looking at the pro hunter mountain in stainless steel for some time know. i haven't decided if i want a 223 22-250 or 243, i will mostly be taking head shots at deer and hogs at ranges less than 200 meters. any help deciding on the caliber will be a big help.i have heard conflicting reports oh the P.H. stock some people say that it has a flimsy plastic stock in which the fore end will touch the barrel if you stick a bi-pod on it or lay it on a sand bag, but on the other hand i have also heard that steyr has corrected the flimsy stock problem.
does any body on the forum have any experience with the pro hunter mountain and vouch for its accuracy/reliability?

I have a 20" pro hunter in 308. I bought it years ago from CDNN and it has the grey stock that some call flimsy. I hear the new ones are black and are more solid. I don't know what the fuss is about as I have not had any problems with my gun. Very accurate and well made. It introduced me to Steyr and now I've owned a M9, S9, M9A1 and the pro hunter. My only regret is not buying a 2nd one at the time in 223.

Like dasher, I have a 308 pro hunter with a black stock, bought about 10 years ago,and after a couple of thousand rounds, I can only say good things about it. The stock on mine does not touch the barrel, with or without tripod/sandbag.

The longer stock on my 7mm rem seems to be more "flimsy" (if one wishes to use that term) but still does not touch the barrel. Yes, if I routinely wanted to bring it to an F-class match I would get a different stock.

Back in Austria I had a 243 prohunter and it was the most consistent shooter I ever had.

thanks for the feedback
My Main Concern was that the stock would touch the barrel , there fore negating the advantage of having a free floated barrel. The more research I Conduct the more I feel should buy the pro hunter. How do you feel about hunting with the Set trigger i.e. is it advisable to use it while shootinS from red world, ( less stable) hunting positions?
