I've had my Steyr SSG M1 6.5 Creedmoor for about a year and have had particular issues with a batch of Norma BTHP 143gr Golden Target Match rounds. They routinely jam in the action at the tip of the bullet when cycling into the chamber. I don't seem to have any problems with the Hornady Match rounds. Has anyone else had any issues with cycling rounds from the magazine? I may try a few more varieties to see if this is only happening or particular to the Norma rounds.

Can you post some pictures compare the 2 rounds you have?
Side by side of rounds.
How they seat in the mag
How they contact the feeding ramp when loading?
I am interested in solving this mystery.

Thanks for replying! I'll post some photos this weekend. Since they are factory rounds I don't believe their OALs are much different though I haven't measured yet as I should have. What's interesting about the M1 as a multicaliber platform is the magazine length is the same for multicalibers with only diferent spacers within the magazine shell. I'm wondering if this would lead to extra space in the action for the cartridge to jackknife under the right conditions. The Normas seem to jam right on the lip of the bullet's HP. Have you had experience with the M1?

OAL maybe an issue. Just my starting guess. But if they fit in the same mag, it should not be a major issue. I am actually guessing the bullet profile.
But you do have very beautiful set up. I would love to shoot one a m1 one day.

It is a NICE, accurate rifle and has alot of great features especially the increased modularity over the SSG08s. Though I did love the integrated rear monopod on the SSG08. Wish they kept that. I was able to find the mlok bipod post so I can use the same great bipods that came with my other SSG08s. I'm also hoping to get the .308 barrel for the M1 soon too. The barrel conversion kits are not as easy to get for this as they are for the MRAD or the AI rifles. I've been waiting for over 8 months for word from Steyr about the .338 LM.
Back to the issue: Here are some photos of the rounds and magazine. The Norma rounds are actually shorter in OAL than the Hornady which just fit the magazine.I was able to simulate the jam with the Normas by runing about 30 rounds through the chamber. The last round in the third magazine caught in the action. (magazine spring?) I don't remember if this happened throughout ther stack or only on the last rounds it seems to just catch on that tiny lip of the HP which gets ever so slightly deformed. They are also slightly sharp to begin with. I added some photos but they are hard to see. I wonder how the HPBT Sierra Match king bullets would do. Thank for any feedback. Cheers

Just a wild guess and dose not hurt suggestion.
Take the mag apart. Lube the mag spring and follower with grease. I usually use this one for clear grease.

2nd suggestion is to take a fine file and round down the front edge of mag body and also the edge of the follower. Sometime there are just rough edge and follower does not push all the way up.

Thanks! I love all my steyr rifles. The Austrians make beautiful firearms. Great suggestions. I have a nice set of fine files for just the task and I have a similar brand of that grease. I'm also waiting on a second magazine so I'll also be able to compare if I have the same problem with that one. I'll let you know how it goes after the next range day. Hopefully the weather will cooperate next week. What Steyr firearms brought you to the forum?

Ssg04, Aug usa a1, m9a1, m40a1 w 357 sig conversion. My price position is a GB from the military trial. Could not justify a ssg08 because it is just a ssg04 with nice chassis while ssg04 does everything I needed. Then comes the m1…
Hope the ar10 dmr will show up here in US by Christmas.

That's an amazing selection especially the GB. Do you fire it or is it just a collector piece? I always look twice when I see one on Gunbroker. I'd love to get an AUG but NY state frowns upon them. I'm afraid it will be the same with the new Steyr DMR I saw on Shot Show videos. It looks amazing.
I would have been fine with just my SSG08s too as they are awesome and simple but that damn SSGM1 with multi-cal just was too much of a temptation.... and a budget breaker! My Steyr lineup is SSGM1, SSG08 .308 (most used), SSG08 .338LM, L9A2, Elite .308 and an HS.50 M1. Non-Steyr - Barrett MRAD 300 PRC, Marlin 45-70, CZ 457 and a Beretta 694. Wish we had some longer ranges around here.
Is your SSG04 in .308? If so, do you do any reloading? I Just started reloading and was hoping to get a few more load suggestions for mine. I need to look at some post or maybe start another topic on that.
