Does this seem normal to you guys? This is a loaded gun with only a slight amount of pressure put on the front of the slide. It will hold back and stay held back. This gun was mfg. November of 2012. The trigger is also 7lb 11oz average by my lyman digital scale. What's up with this thing?

Is it a threaded fitting? It looks like there is something at the muzzle of the barrel that's the reason I asked.
Are you riding the slide or racking it hard?
Are you using a 17rd mag?
If you ride the slide and slowly creep it forward it could hang-up (out of battery) and create the hard trigger pull.
Typically, if you apply pressure at the front of the slide you can take it out of battery=hard trigger pull *warning -it can still be fired*

Here's my Frankensteyr, (M9-A1)
I slowly creeped the slide forward (riding the slide) (loaded)
My Frankensteyr eats everything I put in the mags and has had ZERO malfs and is a sewing machine. So there's nothing "wrong" just rack the slide the way it's designed/intended.

It's a thread protector and yes, I'm aware it's loaded, that's the point. It's not riding the slide back, it's that if you push back slightly on the front of the slide, it won't return forward. It just sits there. Yes, 17rd mag.

This was the subject of a video on this site not too long ago. The issue is a non-issue in that when you pull the trigger the slide is forced into battery and the weapon discharges as designed. There is a "fix" to prevent this from occuring. It involves a small bit of grinding to put a ramp into the path of the roller which is causing this "problem".

I hope this helps. It's a non-problem which never should have occurred. I suspect not having Hr. Bubits present may have contributed to the existence of the issue.

The 7# 11 oz pull is a result of having to force the slide back into battery.

No, that trigger pull is measured at 100% forward slide. I understand that would cause a higher pull. Also, the gun will not fire when the slide is held back (for me at least). The slide moves into battery, but the disconnector does not allow the trigger to reset. This makes you have to rack the slide to fire and expel a live round.

Was it doing this with the "old" barrel?
Your thread protector isn't preventing the slide from moving to the forward position?
Your followers on your 17rd mags have been knocked down to proper level?
The roller in your slide doesn't have any lumps etc?
You've compared your "old" barrel and new barrel? Any differences?

If I may chime in...

I have a new S40-A1 and only been able to get it out to the range twice. 100 rounds each time. The first time, this happened quite a bit to me. I would fire, fire fire, then click. Look down and the slide wasn't fully forward. When I racked it and looked at the cartridge, I can see that that the striker hit the back but didn't hit the primer. Another issue was that the slide didn't lock open at the end of the last round all that often.

This past weekend I took it out again with another 100 rounds. This time the not-fully-slide-forward issue happened only 3 times. The no-locking-on-last-round did occur the first few magazines but then started to work as I was chewing through ammo.

I'm hoping this is just a breaking in thing.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping too. I was running 115gn and 147 through it. If anyone is interested in buying it, I'm putting it and 5, 17rd mags up for sale. I ended up buying a ppq and like the feel better.

Talked to Steyr... They said check the roller for smoothness and freeness. They also advised buffing down the part of the firing pin that contacts the roller. They said if you go too much it will take down trigger pull. I only have holdback issues during firing when the suppressor is on...and yes it's a boosted can

It's a shame you're having problems with your Steyr, but I think you'll love your PPQ. I bought one and absolutely love it. I've had it for a year now, so it's well broken in I have a friend who liked my PPQ so much that he bought one for himself! I enjoy my Steyr S40-A1 quite a bit, but the trigger on the PPQ is still better, IMO.

This is why I suggested inspecting the roller, among other things, in my post above.
I thought you already checked it since you didn't respond, I was thinking I wasn't being helpful.
Well, hope you get her sorted, Steyr knows more about their firearms than I do.
