I have serial number 0027xx on my M40 so I know I have the heavier 8 pound trigger. It was even heavier than that when I bought it but I found out why. It seems I bought a mint "used" gun and all the original grease had gummed up the trigger, transfer bar, and sear. I cleaned it all up and lubed it and the trigger is VASTLY improved but I'm used to triggers around 5 pounds. Now I'm wondering: Is there anyway I can replace my older trigger for a newer one?

yes, it's a free upgrade. call the warranty center at USASTEYR, link under web links section on your left bar.
call them and ask for the process. Should not need an ffl as it is a repair, might cost you shipping there and back or just there, don't know.

Revisiting an old topic here. Does the M40 with a post-10K serial number also have the improved trigger? If not, when was the change made on the M40?

Thanx/

I think Steyr upgraded the trigger on almost all the pistols that were sold in the US. My M40 is #0026**, and it has the new trigger.

I don't know what serial number range is the new vs old trigger, but the best way to tell if your Steyr has the upgraded trigger is to look at the side of trigger. There is a pin in it that appears to guide the trigger safety.

On the original triggers this pin was about a quarter of the distance from the bottom of the trigger to the top of the trigger. On the upgraded trigger it's about halfway up the trigger.

here's a picture of the early trigger

and here is the upgraded trigger
