This week two years ago, when I was working for the local newspaper in Rockingham, NC, I had the privilege of interviewing a Marine medic who survived the Battle of Iwo Jima, which was raging 62 years ago today. His name is Bill Goodwin and he kept a totally forbidden war diary, which he shared with me. His story is remarkable, but probably no more so than the stories not being written today of the Marines, soldiers, sailors and air crew fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But to put things in perspective, more Marines lost their lives at Iwo in one battle than in four years in Iraq.

Read Bill Goodwin’s gripping war diary of Iwo and take a look at his personal war photos, too.

Ten of the 13 Marine medics who came ashore at Iwo Jima in Goodwin's unit were still in action when this group photo was taken early in the battle. Goodwin is first on the left, front row. By the time his unit was withdrawn from the island, Goodwin was one of only three left in his medic group who were uninjured.

Bonus Link: I just ran across this site of Iraq War photos by Marine combat photographer Russell Lee Klika.

Here’s another Iwo Jima story you ought to know about, written by W. Thomas Smith, Jr. on Townhall.com
