I noticed the M40-A1 actually says A1 on the slide. My new M9-A1 only says M9. Is that the way they are?

slide was made then new A1 frames came out. steyr didnt want to remove the finish etch/stamp the new A1 into the slide and refinish.
kinda process that cost money and time.

    Slide markings

Don't think there were any changes to the slide assembly.

I purchased an M9-A1 in early June from CDNN.

My slide says "M9-A1" not just "M9"...

The ones that DON'T say A1 will be a collector's items. That's just my prediction. :)

Better yet, it will become the "Rare and hard to find" M9-A1 edition!

I would call the ones without an A , a transitional gun.

Second generation frame with M slide.

There really isn't any difference between the slides other than the markings.
