Hello from Florida,
I discovered this site and found it very helpful when I was researching my "new" Steyr M40(original version). The first rifle I got was my grandfather's/mother's 1957 Classic Mannlicher in .243. I fell in love with that gun and became spoiled in a way by Steyr-Mannlicher. No other gun I have used has been able to compete with the quality, accuracy, and feel of that rifle. When I decided I needed a larger caliber I was very pleased to find that Steyr was still around, I really didn't know much about the company. I chose the Pro-Hunter Mountain in .270. I still prefer my Classic Mannlicher, but haven't found any other gun that can compete with the Pro-Hunter! I have no worries sitting through a sudden shower with the synthetic stock and finish. No matter which rifle I have with me I always get complements and looks. I finally decided to complete the collection and get the M40. I found a used one at a local shop and since it was only the second one I had seen in about 8 years I jumped on it. I prefer having the manual safety that was on the old model, I don't know why they got rid of it. I put 88 rounds through it today and it performed flawlessly. I can't complement this gun enough. The sights are awesome, and it is very accurate. My friend convinced one of his friends to get one after handling mine. Steyr is by far my favorite manufacturer, I just wish I could afford an AUG! I just checked out the website and saw the new item on my Steyr wish-list: Mannlicher Duett.
