There are quite a few outdoor ranges hosting 25 to 300 yard shooting stations across the Nation, with hotspots where there is ample room for long-range shooting, unencumbered by population density. Then there are the F-Class and Palma match shooter facilities that host competitive rifle events ranging from 300 - 1000 yards. Those kinds of ranges are pretty damn rare, at least in my area of Colorado. <shrug>
For me, here in the 4 Corners area, if I wanted to go sight in my rifle atta 100 yards at a Club range that is also open to the public, I could be there in less than an hour. And, if I wanted to sight in my rifle for 300 yards atta public range, I could be there in about an' hour. But, if I wanted to sight in my rifle at a private club, out to 600 yards, it would take an hour drive and a phone call to the range owner/master in advance to make sure that someone would be there to let me thru the front gate when I get there.
Now, if I wanna sight in my rifle or compete in F-Class mid range (300 - 600 yards) or long range F-Class or Palma matches (800 - 1000 yards, sometimes out to 1200 yards in F-Class!), ranges with the necessary facilities to host such an event becomes more of a logistical problem for me and I'd hafta drive about 8 hours to Byers, Colorado or 6 hours to the range in Raton, New Mexico, which, by the way is hosting the 2013 F-Class World Championship in August. Go Team USA!
But that's just me, livin' out in the boonies of Southwest Colorado. <shrug>
Maybe some of our other SC Bros will chime in and help answer your quandries concerning where ya can go an' shoot and at what distances from their homes in their areas to get to the outdoor ranges.

Anyway, hope this helps, Bro.
Take care.
Wulf <-- never participated in any kind of shooting competitions...unless ya count Carona bottle caps at 15 yds with pistols and Carona bottle caps atta 100 yds with scoped rifles
