As the title states, I put about 300 rounds through the new gen M9A1 and the casings eject directly to the face. This doesn't happen every shot but maybe 3 out of 10 and certainly is ammo related.

Was curious if any of the owners of the new gen m9a1 has had this issue?

It's a pretty common complaint - a lot of new guns seem to do this. You could do a 1911 spring mod on extractor plunger - this will beef up the strength of ejection and should change the trajectory of spent cases. Alternatively, the problem seems to level out and go away for most people after thoroughly breaking the pistol in - this could take a thousand or more rounds.

Thanks Syntax. I was under the impression that the extractor for the newer models had eliminated this problem all together.

I was told by another Steyr shooter that the new style extractor plunger helps, too. Mine is the round-tipped version, which he informed me was the old design. The new design has a flatter tip. I've been meaning to call Steyr and get the new part.

ejection and extraction are two seperate actions. the extractor helps to feed and extract the casing,,,,during extraction, the extractor holds onto the empty casing long enough for the casing to hit the ejector....this is what helps the casing clear the chamber. Changing the angle the ejector has at the tip is an easy way to change the path of the empty casing.

True, but if your extractor doesn't hold onto the round solidly enough and it slips around, that could also cause erratic ejection. If your ejection is inconsistent, it's more likely a problem with your extractor.

True, but if your extractor doesn't hold onto the round solidly enough and it slips around, that could also cause erratic ejection. If your ejection is inconsistent, it's more likely a problem with your extractor.

And this is why my M9A1 (a "Frankensteyr") was cured of erratic ejection when I installed a new extractor from SAI.

I had a Ruger that was particularly sensitive to buildup of residue on the inside of the extractor hook. Had to keep it clean to have consistent ejection... Just sayin to keep em clean if they have troublesome ejection.

Check the bottom of your shot brass. You striker hit should be the standard round hit. If the striker hit is rectangle shaped, then you have the Steyr striker issue. Steyr does not have a spring to pull back the striker, so when you fire the gun the striker lingers and tears the primer. This causes irregular ejection of spent brass. Steyr is aware of this issue and says that this is just the way the gun shoots. I have found adding the 1911 spring does not help nor does changing out the extractor and or ejector.

Thanks AGoyette for the advice but like you said, I received a new set of plunger spring and extractor from Jeff but still having the same issue. I have a feeling Jeff from SAI sent me the old bevel plunger vs the rounded tip. Additionally, the old extractor had a 9 stamped on it while the new one does not; i'm guessing because of the told plunger that's why I'm still having this issue of casing flying directly to the face.

Been there, tried the 1911 plunger spring. It did kick out the brass with more gusto. It did not change the trajectory so the brass just hit me in the face faster. I have irregular ejection issues with both my M40-A1 and my M9-A1. They both have had the extractor replaced. As a matter of fact, the M40-A1 (which I bought used and have personally put over a thousand rounds through this year) hardly had an issue with the angle of ejections (once in a blue moon one would go back and it me on the head). After SAI replaced the extractor it was tons worse. I believe (and my gunsmith agrees with me) that it is caused from Steyr's not having a return spring on the striker. The striker drags on the primer, often tearing it (rectangular primer hits anyone?), and the drag causes irregular ejections issues. It is to the point now that I am probably going to sell both the M40-A1 and the M9-A1 and go with another brand. I know for sure that I am selling the M40-A1. I would sell it even if the ejections was perfect. The recoil on 40 S&W is not my favorite.
