Hey guys this is my first post here at steyrclub i am wondering if somebody can share some insight into some problems my new m40 has. I used to own a m40-a1 about six years ago but I had to sell it a few years back. It was the most reliable semi auto pistol I have owned with absolutely no malfunctions at all with a total round count of about 900 before I sold it (which I never should have done). I recently saw that the m40-a1 was back in the USA with an upgraded trigger. As my favorite pistol was my first m40-a1 I decided I had to get one of these new upgraded models. I bought one off of gunbroker a few months back and have so far put about 700 rounds through it. Unfortunately it is not as rock solid as my first Steyr. In the first 100 rounds I had two failure to fires with two different brands of ammo (Winchester white, Federal champion) the primers looked like they were lightly hit. I just brushed it off as part of this pistols breaking in period. At the 600-700 round mark I had two more failure to fires with the same light primer strikes as the first two while shooting Federal Champion ammo. Along with the ftfs this gun has a very random ejection pattern with brass hitting me in the face and head, ejecting to the left of the gun (I'm not sure how this is even possible), ejecting to the right like it is supposed to, ejecting straight up and sometimes it even ejects forward (If I was a good enough shot I could probably shoot the brass in the air when it decides to eject forward). I keep my gun very clean and I do not "limp wrist". I was examining the extractor before cleaning it yesterday and it seems that there may be to much of a gap between the extractor and the brass. I am not sure if this is normal or not so I am posting a few pics of this. I was planning on using this as my carry gun but with these problems I am having second thoughts. I emailed Steyr USA last week and have yet to hear back. If somebody could shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it. Here are the pics.

my C9 does this.
I believe it has something to do with the extractor pin or whatever its called, the pin that pops the bullet out when it pulls the casing back.
It's just a cheap piece of stamped metal. Mine is not very smooth, however I don't know enough to modify it to change the direction of how it throws the shell off the ejector.
As for the light strikes, pull the firing pin setup and clean it for debris. I ended up getting brass shavings in mine, but didn't have any FTF's.
Look into the BT spring cup. It could be possible your having a spring hang up inside due to the collar on it dragging inside the firing pin.
Now that I have my firearm in hand. I pulled the slide and looked at this.
I had a gap such as you with the casing to the extractor, but not so pronounced.
I like manta's suggestion, perhaps its moving slightly on you.
That or it could just be a bad extractor and then SAI would take care of it. They seem to have no issues sending out new ones to people.
I'm tempted to ask for an extra one just to experiment with.
The barrel does not even come into contact with the extractor. There seems to be a slight gap between the barrel and the extractor with the slide closed. So no, the barrel does not push the extractor into the correct position over the case rim.

After every range session I clean the gun thoroughly. I strip the slide down and remove the striker, extractor and the subframe assembly and hose it all down with gunscrubber. After its dry I hose it down again with remoil and remove the excess with compressed air so the metal has just a very light coat of oil. There are brass shavings on and in the subframe and extractor but I have never seen any in the striker channel or inside or on the striker itself. It is kind of weird that I'm having these ftf because the whole striker system is smooth as glass and moves like it is on ball bearings. And the spring feels real smooth moving in the striker with no hitches or grabbing. The trigger is real smooth with almost no creep at all.
You might want to call Steyr and try to get a new extractor and spring.
What dose the spent brass look like? Big Dents on the side or scrapes?
Try running the gun Wet!! (with oil/gun grease) I Think that Ive worked out the FTF on mine buy running it with gun grease in the frame rails also in the firing block channel in the slide and on the firing block itself!(yes I was shocked to discover this) Try CLP on and in the extractor channel. (It may be striker fired but it is not a Glock (not coated in their special coating) and needs oil)
Update: I took mine apart and examined using an empty shell. My M40 extractor has the same space/gap... when the barrel drops/cants in the slide the casing moves to the edge/small notch of the extractor for ejection (looks to be a normal function of the cycling process)!!
I do believe that the extractor can be polished on the contact points to improve performance.
