I have an SSG 69, made in 1999, and I've never seen a picture of one like it. It has a black stock, came with rings w/ matching serial #s, and the 6x ZFM scope. It has the butter knife bolt handle, but no iron sights on the barrel. Is this unusual?

Is there a particular model number or designation for this variation?

Here are 3. By the way, outside diameter at muzzle is appr. .71 in (18 mm).

One more thing. Left side markings, GSI Inc T'ville AL (barrel); Steyr Mannlicher Mod SSG69 (receiver). Anyone familiar with these?

GSI was the earlier imported of Steyr- they went Tango Uniform and dumped their inventory to CDNN. Lots of us got our Ms from CDNN from that bankruptcy. T'ville AL is Trussville, Alabama, where they were based.

SteyrArms USA is a new company which now supports us in incredibly fine fashion.

The receiver markings indicate is a model SSG69, a tactical rifle. You can look that up on the web.

Thanks, ETH77. I've scoured the web without much luck. My question is, what kind of SSG69 is it? It has (I think) the medium profile barrel of the original SSG69s, but no sights. With one exception - a used .243 for sale in England that had no rear sight at least, the end of the barrel couldn't be seen - the only images I've seen of SSGs with no sights have been those PIIs and later with the heavier barrel and large bolt handle.

Have you (or anyone else out there) seen SSG69s like this one, with the original barrel, butterknife bolt handle, and no iron sights? And if so, does anyone know what it is called, how rare or common they are, etc?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I contacted Steyrarms and got the following response in less than 2 hours from my e-mail:

"That is an SSG PI which is no longer produced, It has the tapered barrel not the straight heavy barrel which is on the ones being produced now."

The person responding didn't say why it didn't have the iron sights that the other tapered barrel PIs seem to have or give me any info on how common these are. I wrote back to see if I could get more specifics, but haven't heard back yet.

Now you know why we rave about the support from SteyrArms... Since GSI imported the weapon and not SteyrArms, the reason for no front sight is probably lost in the mists of time. A bankruptcy tends to get paper trails shredded.

You might try Rifle Country on www.TheHighRoad.us. Or one of the sniper/tactical sites. I know it's no fun asking questions into a black hole, but that's kind of the only option right now.

This is maybe a special order PI without rear and front sight.
The rear sight can be a problem for PI when using a big scope on it.

The Steyr factory can certainly tell you if it was ordered that way or not.

The gentleman from Steyrarms said the same thing: "The only versions I know that did not have sights were the heavy barrel models unless special ordered."
I got it new (from CDNN) and was surprised when I opened the box and saw it lacked the iron sights. At the time, I tried to find out about it from GSI, but the folks there were not helpful. I was just wondering if it was a particular submodel and how many were made. Looks like it was probably a special order. If I remember correctly, CDNN had more than one; perhaps some PD or other agency ordered some this way and then backed out.
