Hummm..... I just saw in the new CDNN catalog that they sell universal magazine springs for 9mm and 40.

Wonder how hard it would be to do a little trimming on my old 10rd, make an extension sleeve and end up with a 30rd mag....

Anyone tried anything like this yet?

I've thought about this, too.

If I had ANY welding ability (I do not), I would think I could take a stock mag and extend it "indefinitely".

The only part I think would be difficult would be grinding the welds inside the mag.

My soon-to-be father-in-law is damn fine welder.....wonder what he could do with this idea.

what would you make the sleeve out of?...could one buy one of these extended mags for another pistol and cut and weld it on?

I would think that any person with reasonable metal-bending skills and the right equipment (brake, maybe) could make a magazine extension.

It really is simply a box. Once you get past the tapered end with the feedlips, the metal dimensions remain constant. It's a box.

I suppose a good way would be to sacrifice one magazine for this experiment. Here's what I would do:

Disassemble one mag, and cut it pretty much in half. Build a tubular box out of similar sheet metal to place in-between the two halves, effectively extending the magazine. You would be left with stock feed lips, and a stock bottom end with floorplate, and could fabricate the center section about as long as you want.

All that would be left would be to source an appropriate spring, and with the popularity of hi-cap mags for Glocks (including 33 rounders), getting a spring that would work shouldn't be all that hard.

Another thought would be to make up the "box" and take it and the chopped mag to a welding shop and have them TIG weld it or braze it. Both should leave no grinding on the inside and minimal on the outside.
