I recently had problems with my trigger reset and un-authorized double-taps, so i got my gun back from SAI in Georgia, and went to the range shot off 110rds. with no problem. when I got home instead of cleaning it, i thought let me just keep it dirty and see if I can get it to malfunction. I got a new job and have lots of free time so I got to thinking more....which usually gets me in trouble.


I read a post on here someone saying they wouldn't take it into battle in a SHTF situation, they would grab the glock, because it's proven. I really like my Steyr and trust it.
So i had an idea of doing a little torture test has anyone ever done this? My ideas are to get it muddy, then just using lake water rinse it off. shoot.

Put it in sand and get the sand on the inside, i.e. rack the slide. then shoot it.
I was also thinking about putting it in water for a few days, then shoot it, I wonder if I should put it in my freezer for a few days, then go shoot it. i will be using WWB and blazer brass. Any suggestions you have I will try and I am going to get some pictures.

Any ideas? I don't want to break it or cause irepairable damage, just prove itself. If I get sand in the firing pin hollowed chanel or the lower unit can it cause damage. I plan on shooting about 800-1000 rds. In my test over about 3 weeks. I figure 800 rounds by itself is dirty but then add the mud and sand, maybe some lint from my dryer? should make us proud, if it works. :roll:

Torture testing

In June '99, Bubits tested an early M40 "prototype" by firing 10,000 rounds through it within two days. He lubricated it once at the beginning of the session. Then he sprayed the pistol with an air hose after every 500 rounds but otherwise did not clean it thereafter. He had 5 malfunctions, one of which was a dead primer. He tweaked the extractor to fine-tune the gun for reliability.

The internet site does not say what type of ammunition he used. However, I'm sure it was not something +p or +p+ and was most likely a western made decent quality ammunition. Remember this should be a test of the pistol and not the ammunition.

The pistol was most likely very well cleaned and properly lubricated before the testing. So you may want to do a complete take down and cleaning before hand.

Also take special note that he used an air hose after every 500 rounds this would be important to prevent any type of foreign objects from causing a harmful malfunction to the shooter.

I would also imagine that the barrel probably had to be replaced after going through 10,000 rounds in two days so know that the life of your barrel will probably be gone with that much shooting. Also time would have to be allowed for the barrel cool with that much shooting or again you could have a harmful result.

I would not suggest that you water or mud test the pistol as you could cause obstructions that could have harmful results to you as a shooter. I would not suggest that any individual with any firearm conduct such tests without some type of machine to do the shooting and distance as well as protection for the individual conducting the test.

I think it is a great idea. I plan to do the same to my current M9A1 as soon as I can get another to play nightstand duty... If all goes well, I would use the "tortured" Steyr exclusively for CCW.

I've even tossed around the idea of putting up a donation for a club pistol. If we raised enough to pick one up from CDNN, said pistol could be tortured and then one of the lucky folks who contributed could be chosen at random and allowed to inherit the pistol afterwards. I just don't know how that idea may conflict with straw purchase laws - I assume it wouldn't since the pistol would be sent to a FFL if the winner was out of state. Just an idea...

torture tested

I went ahead and started. My gun had 110rds throught it and I didn't clean it or lube it. This is what it looked like, typical of what it looks like after the range.

After reading heavy metals review I figured talc or a drying agent would be worse than the course sand, so I put the steyr into a batch of cat litter. I sifted it in there for about 10-15 seconds untill it was penetrated.

I racked the slide and was really gritty, I took it apart and this is what the inside looked like.

This is what it looked like after I pieced it back together. I never removed the barrell or spring as I didn't want to dislodge any talc. I just removed the slide for the pics. I might have dry fired it a few times, but that was it.

With gun in hand I carried it to IHOP to eat breakfast and think about where to do the next step. I live in the city so, I was thinking for a place to find mud and a place where I could lay the pistol on the ground and run it over with my truck, and not have fear of someone calling the cops. I found a place and put it on the ground and drove my 94 nissan pickup over the gun.

I actually stopped while resting on the pistol and took this picture. Then the truck rolled backwards off the gun. I started again and completely ran over the gun. It was kind of soft mud so the pistol got mud really packed into it.

I did not remove the slide after this. If you really had this happen most people would kind of shake the mud off, so thats what I did trying to remove the biggest clumps.

I put the gun in a plastic bag to take to the range as it was getting mud wherever it touched.
Off to the range, I didn't tell them what I was up to.

The first couple of shots I got lots of debris on my hands the shots seemed to vibrate most of the mud off, but it was making my hands and wrists dirty with all the residue and dust.

I shot 20 rounds then opened here up to make sure nothing was breaking. Looked good. Put her back together, and continued shooting. I was also shooting my SIg229. In 80 rounds I had no problems. In response to minister I do not think a new barrel would be required after 10k rounds, a gunshop around here has rental glocks with over 200,000 rounds through them, and they function fine. This is the gun at the range.

I was wanting something to mess up, so I figured maybe if I rapid fired the heat would bake the mess and cause problems. 30 rds, in less than a minute and no failures of any kind.

I am not good on judging distance but I think this is probably 20 feet out and.......................................................................................................................................................................................
My fellow steyr owners, I let the results speak for themselves.

I brought the gun home and it is suprisingly clean. It has no mud or dirt and the trigger feels good.
I plan on shooting more without cleaning it but Ir has been tortured enough.

I was hesitant to do this but with all my trigger reset problems before I sent it in, I kind of had broken trust with my steyr and wanted her to prove her faith before I gave her a second chance. I did not pull any punches. I always respected my steyr but now I know it means business. Thanks for the support guys.

Nice test. I recently did over 700 rounds in Tenn shooting school without a hitch, without a cleaning or lube. It seems to work better the more you break in a Steyr. Wow, bad grammer....... :roll: more coffee coming..... :lol:
