I wanted to know what makes the difference between the two mags? I own an S40 but bought some 10 rd mags from CDNN. Is it possible to dremel the base plate and stretch the spring or order a 12 rd spring?
Not possible.

I'll show you... but first I need another beer.

OK.

The CDNN Steyr mags I bought were 10 rounders @ 9.99 each.

You can see that the limiting factor isn't the spring, it's the plastic baseplate.

Shown here next to a 12rd mag:

Edit: I didn't catch the part about the S series until I reread it, but the same applies. What would be possible is putting M 12 round mag baseplates on 10 round S magazines. I don't know why anyone hasn't done this. For 20ish bucks for a 12 rounder from madecov and all the ten round mags from CDNN you could wish for, you could make your own 10 round S40 magazines all day by swapping that ridiculous plastic baseplate from one mag to the other and adjusting spring length. Seems tricky, but a lot easier than finding S40 mags.

AHH I C IC. Thanks for pointing that out. Looks just like my Ruger 10 rd mags during the great Ban in the 90's. Maybe I can make them S40 mags? lol..
I've got a SIGMA 40 mag that I picked up from a local (sh!tty) gunshop at half price, thinking it was a 15 rounder.. it wasn't, and they don't do exchanges. But, after removing a few coils from the spring, and swapping it with the 10 round Steyr mag spring, I could suddenly fit 11 180gr Speer Gold dots, where only 10 fit before. So, there is something to think about.

Well, I got the mags and actually like the extended length for target shooting. For CCW I'll stick with an S40 mag.
precisely why I've always said you only need one S mag (after all that's how many the gun can hold when you are wearing it concealed).
