hey everyone, i just joined this site. i have recently aquired a steyr m9 and i love it. it shoots beautifully and is very easy to conceal. i have one slight problem though that i was hoping someone could help me out with. i want to start joining the force to make people aware of open-carry, but unfortunately, i can't seem to find a good holster for open-carry. i've checked out the galco leather, but they're too stiff and not easy to pull, in case of an extreme situation. i was checking out the kydex holsters and i really like those, but it seems they don't make them for the steyr m9. i currently reside in fairfax county northern virginia and we don't have many gunshops around here to chose from with a decent selection. if anyone has any suggestions and/or ideas on the best style holsters for open-carry and possibly competition i would greatly appreciate your response. thanks.

for open carry where concealment is not a concern, i would recomend either...bladetech (either standard paddle oe dropped and offset) quality is unbeatable for kydex but ait time sux and expensive. Or grandfather oak custom ($27 quick companion incl. shipping if u mention this site) as being good, quick, cheap. Maybe not as slick as the BIG companies as he does them all custom by hand, but secure and will modify any way he can.

Even if the Steyr is not on their list, they make holsters for it. They might tell you it's for an M40, but all the frames are the same; an M40 holster will fit an M9 perfectly (and an S9, too!).

I have their CTAC holster, but they make plenty of OWB stuff as well.

Steyr also sells (or used to sell) a nice little belt-slide holster for the M-series, but with the company reorganizing its US operations, there's no place to order one right now. Expect that we may be able to get one again in a few months. I plan on picking one up as soon as they are available again.

For $28, it's perfect in my book. Hopefully I'll either find one or they'll become available again. If ANYONE comes across a source for these, let us know!

I was able to get my M-40 to fit very nicely into a black Bianchi L7 pancake holster intended for Ruger P-series pistols that I had laying around. I put my Steyr in a freezer bag after applying a generous coat of lubricant. Soaked the holster in warm water for 5 or 6 minutes and inserted the M-40. I re-formed the holster around the pistol with an old toothbrush handle (no sharp corners or you will scratch the holster's finish) and stretched the retention strap over the back of the slide, then allowed it to dry with the pistol in it. Good secure fit, and it looks like it was made for the gun.
