Gentlemen,
I present to you: H.R. 45 - Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009

Full text.

Discuss if you wish, but we all know the government knows best and we must all be protected from ourselves. If they won't do it for us, who will?

As we are all well aware, the traditional problem with removing arms from the good people of America has been that pesky Second Amendment. The solution, then, is not to craft the language of the legislation differently; it is to change the vector of attack. Why suffer all the exasperation of banning guns, when instead one can simply ban gun owners?

Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth.

Oh yes we all know that when you remove guns from society we all benefit.
1930's Germany comes to mind first.
And you know that criminals will just comply because its the law.
And the state will always be there to protect us.

And let's not forget this gem:

H.R. 45 said:
In order to ascertain compliance with this Act, the amendments made by this Act, and the regulations and orders issued under this Act, the Attorney General may, during regular business hours, enter any place in which firearms or firearm products are manufactured, stored, or held, for distribution in commerce, and inspect those areas where the products are so manufactured, stored, or held.
Who needs a warrant to search your house when mere ownership of firearms allows the Attorney General the right to do it to over 50% of all American households, any weekday from 9-5...

I don't think for a minute that this legislation has a snowball's chance in hell of making it out of committee, let alone passing, but it's probably important to stop from time to time to recognize travesty these people would make of our rights if left unchecked. And it's certainly worth watching, just in case...

How about a bill to license all politicians and tax their income. I would propose that all income they receive from us over $45,000 be taxed at a rate of 100%. And while we're at it let's open the congressionsal retirement plan and health coverage to all Americans.
