You definitely need to get an A1 if you plan on attaching a laser/light to the weapon, as the newer models have a standard picatinny rail. They make adapters for the old M's, but I believe they are becoming more and more scarce every day. Also, Steyr upgraded the extractor along the way to make up for some short-comings, but I believe they will replace the old extractors in the original M's as a warranty job at no cost to you.
Personally, I like the new aesthetics of the A1 series - I was never really interested in the original M's probably just due to sheer looks. Also, weaponlights are important for me for, as the M9A1 will be my new primary home defense weapon should my USPc .45 ever begin acting screwy.
If the rail and not having to deal w/ the extractor stuff is worth it to you, get the A1. I personally recommend it - great pistols from a company with great customer service.
