Hi everyone,
I have been poking around on this forum for a bit and thought it was high time I joined. I am at a bit of a crossroads. I have a m9a1 on hold at cabelas, yes, it is the hybrid model from Imported through PW. It is on sale for $379 as noted by others here.

My question is pretty straight forward, with all the collective wisdom on this site, should I buy this gun or should I pass? Are there ways of knowing if this has a newer style extractor by looking at it? The gun was sealed in 2005 according to the green sticker on the case, in case that makes a difference. Aside from the extractor issues, are there other red flags I should pay attention to?

The only reason I was interested in this gun was the price point and the fact it is a 9mm. I don't foresee this being a carry gun. I love my styer 270 mountain rifle, so I tend to expect a lot from Styer.

Welcome to the SteyrClub!

If you're not going to carry then the extraction problems are not an issue. That is the only deal killer for most people, and that's fixable with a little patience. I'd go for it, break it in with dry firing - just rack and shoot, rack and shoot. You can easily do 1000x in two days. Clean the weapon thoroughly, I use low odor mineral spirits from Lowes or HD. Make sure to clean the striker channel - the tutorial is in the downloads section, as are a number of other good tutorials. Put the 1911 safety/stop spring mod into the extractor plunger spring, and I think you'll be good to go, even for carry should you wish.

Polishing the chamber isn't a bad idea either, but not absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the thoughts and advice. I went back to look at the gun today and the extractor is the newer style, I think. It looked much sharper than the older rounded style. I'll take a look in the downloads section too.

Buy it and don't look back. One of the sweetest firearms I have ever used! AFAIK, Styer USA will send a replacement Extractor quickly and at no charge..........

My 2005 M9-A1 was erratic at first but never failed to fire and eject the casings. SAI sent new mag springs and extractor at NO CHARGE and it became a fabulous pistol. The only reason I don't still own it is because I traded for a NIB S9-A1 which also needed an extractor upgrade. I've very pleased with Steyr and I suggest you get the M9-A1 if it's still available.
