Well, me old dad (you know him as DocChronos) is finally threatening to clean his M9. We have rather different opinions on cleaning our guns. He decided not to clean his M9 until he ran 1000 rounds through it, because "A tactical pistol should be able to function dirty!" I, on the other hand, keep my M9 clean enough to preform surgery with. My opinion on the matter is that a tactical pistol should be able to preform while dirty, but why should it have to if it doesn't need to? The one time you need that gun to save you and yours from painful death might be the one time it doesn't function right because of its scummy feed ramp, or its gunk-caked ejector. In that case you can bludgeon your coked-out assailant with your new plastic club. Anyway, I just wanted to celebrate this great new website, and poke fun at me old dad while I did it. Yeah, that's right, dad. I'm talking to YOU.

You can run your car 20,000 miles without changing the oil too, and it should run. But is it good for it? Or even smart? Why tempt fate by not doing your preventative maintenance, whether it be a car or a pistol. It's been pretty well proven that you can shoot 1000 rounds without cleaning.

Clean the gun! I clean mine after every shooting. 50 rounds or 200 rounds, I clean it. These are tight guns, they aren't Glocks.

I usually clean mine after every shoot. If I know I am shooting again soon I may let it sit. Sometimes I think I am too anal about it.

My Brother In Law has a Springfield XD that he went over a year and 1200 rounds without a cleaning. Not one failure over that time. Even with all the people saying how easy the finish on the XD's rust, he never had an issue.

I like to clean guns. That is, when it is one or two. If I have been out shooting a bunch of them, then it gets tedious.

I clean mine at least every other trip to the range. EXCEPT my carry gun, which gets cleaned every time. Mainly because I don't want powder residue staining my clothes. :?

No shame in it. the "Law of Diminishing Returns" applies to firearms as well. The more you own/ shoot, the less time you have to clean them often. Luckily, my Steyr doesn't seem to need pampering but I don't abuse it either.

I clean mine everytime I use it. It could probably go longer in between cleanings but I enjoy it.

+1 deluxe.. I sometimes clean mine before i even leave the range,,if not i come home and clean mine and some buddies that went with me just for the sake of knowledge. not sure how dirty the s40 is gonna get with all the polishing yet ,since i have not hit the range since i polished her.

Actually, I taught the young pup everything he knows about guns, including to clean them when you get back from the range. He thinks just because he can out shoot me that he can teach the old dog a few tricks. Well, maybe he can: he's the one who told me about the Steyrs in the first place. Now I have two of them. If anyone was blindsided by an unexpected love for a plastic pistol, it was me..

The reason I didn't clean my M9 until I ran 1,000 rounds through it is because I wanted to see if I could trust it under stress. I won't carry a gun I can't trust--I trust my Steyrs, and when I find the right holster, I will carry my S9.

So you did your own 'torture test". now do you clean it every few hundred rounds? or are you still trying to beat it down?

my old honda went 40k miles beyond where i knew i should've replaced the timing belt. It still ran great untill the day the belt broke at 269k miles.
I miss that car! Don't want you to miss your S9 as they are discontinued at present.

I am remarkably un-brand loyal except for three products, Steyrs, Preludes, and Merrell boots.

Interesting.
I usually clean a new gun at 50-, 100-, and 150-round intervals for initial break-in. Then I try to go the next 350 rounds without cleaning for the rest of the 500 round break-in period. If there is any malfunction during that 350-round period, it gets cleaned and the 350 round count is started again. If it malfs again, it is sent in for factory repair or otherwise retired from the self defense arsenal.
Then clean after each shoot for a CCW gun and shoot 3 or 4 rounds rapid fire to test after cleaning.

I finally cleaned the S9 at 600 rounds after it had a FTE. Not a bad extractor, just a gunked up chamber. I cleaned the M9 around 1500 rounds just because I had the gear out and felt sorry for it. I cleaned miscellaneous other handguns at the same time, so I should be good for another 1000 or so rounds ... or maybe several thousand rounds, if I cycle through them all.
