I just picked up my first Steyr pistol from Cabela's in Owatonna, Minnesota - an M9-A1.
I actually traded my Sig P229 .40 S&W for the M9.
Date code is LWR - Feb 2013, so fairly new production.
I came across the Steyr after researching the Caracal and learned that they were designed by the same person.
I had never given the Steyr pistol a serious consideration before now.
I started watching all the YouTube videos on the Steyr and liked the "modular" design better than the Caracal.
The pistol feels like my H&K P7's - my all time favorite.

I took it to the range with 150 rounds of 9mm - all I had left (I mostly shoot .40 nowadays).
100 rounds of Winchester white box 115gr FMJ and 1 box of 50 Wolf steel case FMJ (just to see how they would feed).
This pistol handled all 150 rounds with not a single problem - even shooting one-hand(weak hand).
I recently picked up some hollow points to try out next - but these get expensive to test with.
Accuracy was excellent.
I was unsure about the trapezoid sights at first, but now I really like them.
I did nothing to the pistol except field strip it and check it over really good.
I didn't even lube it, just ran it straight out of the box.
I will lube the slide rails on next outing, but I will not clean it just yet.
I am going to run 1,000 rounds thru it before cleaning just to see how it runs(when I can find some more ammo(@#$%)).
I have never done this to any of my pistols before, but I am sure the Steyr can handle it!
If I can figure out how to do it, I will post some pictures from next outing.
I am very impressed with this pistol, and even thinking about ordering an S9 or s40 next.

Congrats on your new pistol. I just picked up an S40A1 on Friday and put 250 rounds through it on Saturday. Fantastic pistol. Wish I had bought one sooner.

I called Cabela's and told them to find an S40-A1 for me.
They are a little higher on the price than others, but they always give me a fair deal on any trade.
One nit pick with the M9 is the erratic ejection - I sure hope this clears up like some say will happen after >200 rounds.
Does the m40 or s40 have this problem?
Also, mags are not drop free, but this could be that I haven't cleaned and lubed yet.
But the pistol really isn't that dirty after only 150 rounds thru it so far.

Hi Abakan,

Stery is a sleeper in the US. I first became acquainted with Steyr when I saw the GB, a great, under-appreciated pistol. Then I started lusting for the AUG. don't have that ...yet...<sigh>.

Got the M series in 9 and 40, and both are wonderful performers. Welcome to the Land of Found Steyrs!

The Cabelas in Hamburg Pa., has S-40A1s in stock, they should transfer one for you. Eventually, I will an S series up myself. My .40 doesn't have the erratic ejection issue, my 9 does, but, the more I shoot it, the less erratic it is. Congrats on your purchase, the Steyr is a great pistol.

The gentleman I spoke to here at Cabela's Owatonna, MN said it should not be a problem to bring in an S40 - since he can see it in their system (SKU # and all) - it just might take a week or so. I was thinking about getting the 9mm caliber conversion kit eventually - so I can have two "S" pistols in one.
Does anyone have any experience with these caliber conversion kits?
Since the ejector is part of the "multifunction component" does this pose any problems with funky ejection or is the ejector the same regardless of caliber?
It looks like the caliber conversion kits are only available for the "S" models according to Steyr website - is that correct?

Welcome to the club! I have an S40-A1 and really like it, though the sights still give me some trouble. My S40-A1 doesn't eject erratically, but it does eject far. Enjoy, and keep us up to date on your experiment.

I second that, how to you change the angle of the ejection. My M9-A1 extracts beautifully, but I am tired of getting hit on the head and left and right arms by the brass ejecting. I tried the 1911 plunger spring trick and that just made it worse. I have heard about filing a little bit off the ejector, is this what you are talking about?
