I wish the they would have done the C model a little different, with a M slide and a S grip a la CCO.
Am I the only one (CX-A1 gripe)

I actually agree with that completely. I'll probably just get an S-A1 eventually to compliment my M-A1 and leave it at that, though. But as someone who loves his Steyr pistol and has aspirations of possibly getting a concealed carry permit (most likely after leaving California), I'd prefer the shorter grip and longer slide.

The purpose of the CA1 is you have less slide to draw from a holster and little less time to draw. A fullsized grip with normal capacity magazines 15/17rnd vs 10rnd 9mm mags. Sure shorter grip would accept larger mags but no one has made a grip adapter for them.

Mine was $480 plus $15 FFL transfer. But really, in the (not so long run) ammo will be a much larger part of cost of ownership than initial purchase price, unless you plan on just looking at it and not using it.I get it too, just can't afford it! Wishin' they'd come down a bit more.

Personally I love the C9-A1 design. I'm never comfortable when my pinky is off the grip on "traditional" compacts and on my (rather large) frame it's pretty easy to conceal.

Amen my brother.... i cut the grip of an M-A1 down to S series length and carry it daily with S mags in it. when the L comes out i will do the same... i did a few other local customers the same way, they love it.

It's a silly concept IMO unless you just favor a longer barrel, but then why would you want to limit yourself while trying to help yourself at the same time.
As for how short you make the grip, I'm not sure, but if I'm going for a longer barrel for accuracy, I want to be able to hold it down range too.
Carrying a long barreled gun for EDC just doesn't make sense to me.
But for those who only have lets say 1 or 2 hand guns, I can see the reasoning behind a short grip and longer slide.
They want to carry easily, but still have a longer gun.
Though, I'd personally find a longer slide to be annoying on my hip in my pants while walking.
The 1911's with the rounded butt stock, I cannot stand those either, they don't fit right in my hands at all.

This dead horse has taken its fair share of beatings. Do a search and you will find that many of us think the C9A1 is a backwards design - you are not alone in your confusion. A short grip and regular slide would have made a lot more sense from a concealed carry perspective.

hehehehave you got any pics or anything of that? for the life of me i cant find a S used local, but a couple m's have for sure. i love my m40-a1 and would love to have an s9-a1 or chop an m to be able to run any caliber big or little...

I like the bigger grip and shorter barrel. Reason I bought the c9. My reasoning isn't based on science of self defense carry or study of handling mechanics....its just I like higher ammo capacity and a larger grip and I find a shorter barrel easier to cc. So I have no problem with the c9....I find it was the best choice for what I wanted. Too each their own.

C9-A1 lover here....daily carry mine in a custom OWB holster from Josens...not a big guy and have very little problem with the full size grip printing. Mostly carry at the 3 o'clock position. perfect set-up for me, like the control of the full size grip.

Well I think it is safe to say where I fall on this topic. I held the M9 in my local shop when I was researching the C9. For my EDCC I now have my C9. I like the fact it is shorter slide and a full grip. I have larger hands, I can't get a decent feel around a smaller firearm. Even in the XD class, I would need the extended mag to make it "fit" my hand. I liked the M9 just fine, but it was too large for what I wanted. I haven't held the S9, so I can't ring in on it.
I don't "see" what the complaint is about the M slide and the S grip. I (from my armchair quarterback position) like my C9 and think for an introduction to the quality that is Steyr it is a great representation, one that I am proud to share with friends, family and enthusiasts. It is like being the first kid on the block to have one sort of deal. I will let the much more knowledgeable folks here argue the fine points of each pistol because they have all the nuances down pat. For the laymen, I think this fits perfect for what it is, quick to draw, solid to grip and handle, and reliable action, time and again.
