    Default Steyr SSG serial numbers

    Hi,

I own a SSG 69 P1 and was wondering when it was made. Does anyone know how to interpret the serial numbers?

1966xx (The rifle is at the 'smith and I'm not sure about the last two numbers).

    Thanks,

    Paul

There is a date code stamped on the receiver by the proof marks. Call SAI with that code and they can tell you when it was made.

Mine doesn't make any sense. It's marked BHO

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

that is odd, i was under the impression this rifle was first produced in like 1969... if yours is marked BHO, that would appear to have been produced in 60....

got a picture of yours ?

I'd guess that the stamp is really BHD, or should have been...

That's what the folks at Steyr said. He told me to check under the bolt handle as well. I'll take a pic tonight.

Well the plot thickens. Here are the pics.

According to the guys at Steyr, the number under the bolt handle will closely correspond to the year of manufacture. Mine reads 62. I've very curious as to what I have. I believe that the BHO proof marks may be correct or part of a different marking system. Another anomaly is my front sight. I didn't think about taking a picture but it is of the adjustable variety, which hints to later manufacture.

I am the third owner. Last owner is a friend of mine, put very few rounds through the tube. He purchased it from a wealthy gentleman who bought it and kept it in storage. Estimated round count is 50.

    Any ideas?

Well the mystery is over. The Steyr US folks referred me to Mr. Bauer at Steyr in Austria. According to a SN search, the rifle was manufactured in July of 1990.

I'll post a range report ASAP.
